WATER HYACINTH CAPSULES PREPARATION USING SODIUM ALGINATE AS ADSORBER OF METAL ION Cu (II) IN WASTEWATER  OF PRINTED BATIK INDUSTRY

ABSTRACT

Water hyacinth have potential ability to adsorb heavy metal in wastewater treatment. The objective of this research is to define the optimal condition of pH and initial concentration. To define the model isotherm adsorpsion appropriate and to find out correlation between adsorption time and effluent  concentration using column analysis.
The research conducted in batch and continuous method. The variables observed are the composition of Ca-Alg capsule, composition of water hyacinth (SEG) capsules, variation of pH and initial concentration of Cu. SEG capsule preparation conducted by mixing the Na-Alg by SEG in a variety of compositions, (4:1), (2,5:2,5): (3:2), and (2:3). Bioadsorption SEG capsules testing conducted by contacting the 3 grams of SEG capsules with 50 mL solution of Cu and then stirred for 30 minutes. pH variations performed at pH 4.6 and 8. Variation of the initial concentration of Cu experiments conducted by assigning the initial variation of Cu by 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg / L
The results showed that the composition of Ca-Alg capsules are spherical obtained on the composition of 1% Na Alg and 1% CaCl2. SEG capsules with a ratio of 2:3 (2 g Na-Alg and 3 g SEG) has the largest adsorption capacity of 0.046 mg Cu/g capsule. The results of experimental data showed that the reaction can be represented by Freundlich adsorption equilibrium equation model with correlation coefficient value (R2) and the value of the maximum capacity of SEG capsules (q º, GCU / gkapsul) are to 0.971 and 0.061. Acidity of the process that produces the maximum adsorption was at pH 8 and the initial concentration of Cu 100 mg / L capsule still can absorb the metal ions Cu2+. In the experiment with column adsorption, adsorbent have been exhausted at  12th hours where the value of Ct/Co is 98,4% and the effluent concentration is .of 9.836 mg / L with the adsorpsion ability is 0.092 mg Cu / g capsule.
